BREAKING: Bitcoin Whale That Survived the 2020 Crash Just Moved $378 Million After Six Quiet Years

Bitcoin whale news dormant 2020 wallet moves $378 million 4582 BTC price trading

A long-quiet Bitcoin wallet has suddenly come back to life. On Monday it moved about 4,582 BTC, worth roughly $378 million, to five separate addresses, according to on-chain data tracked by Arkham and reported by CoinDesk and The Block. Four of the addresses received exactly 1,000 BTC each, and the fifth received about 582 BTC. So far, none of those five addresses has moved the coins again, and none has been identified as an exchange deposit wallet.

The history of the wallet is what makes traders pay attention. The coins arrived on March 3, 2020, when they were worth about $40.8 million and Bitcoin traded near $8,900. Just days later, Covid panic crashed Bitcoin by more than 40% to below $4,000. The owner sat through that crash and every cycle since, and the same coins are now worth about nine times more.

This is the wallet's first big move in more than six years. It sent nothing out for over four years, apart from one tiny 0.009 BTC test payment in August 2024. It is also not alone: last week another dormant whale moved about 4,500 BTC, worth roughly $376 million, after more than four years of silence, according to The Block.

For traders, a move like this cuts both ways. Old coins waking up can come before selling and sharper volatility, which is why analysts watch measures of old coin movement closely. But the same move can also be a simple security or custody reshuffle by the same owner moving coins between his own addresses. Right now there is no confirmed sale, so the purpose is still unknown.

The timing matters too. Bitcoin was trading around $82,300 to $83,200 when the move was reported, after dipping near $81,200, and the market is already nervous ahead of US inflation data. Traders will now watch whether the five receiving wallets stay quiet or start sending coins toward exchanges — that next step would change the story from a mystery transfer to real selling pressure.
