Robinhood Brings Ripple's $2.5B RLUSD to 28.6M Customers — What's Next?

Robinhood Ripple RLUSD stablecoin app 28.6 million customers

Robinhood will offer Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin in its main app before the end of 2026, putting a $2.5 billion token in front of 28.6 million funded customers. That is a very big shop window for a stablecoin that only launched in December 2024, and the timing is no accident: it lands one day after Ripple won final approval for its own US national trust bank.

Key points:

  • RLUSD reaches the Robinhood app by the end of 2026, with up to 28.6 million funded customers able to use it.
  • Bitstamp will settle in RLUSD on the XRP Ledger, and Robinhood will run its treasury on Ripple's software.
  • The twist: Robinhood co-founded the rival USDG network, and it has not said how the two stablecoins will share its products.

RLUSD is not starting from zero on Robinhood's turf. It already runs on Robinhood Chain and on Bitstamp, the exchange Robinhood bought for $200 million in June. The app rollout is the retail step, and it is the one that actually puts the token in ordinary customers' hands. Ripple president Monica Long framed the deal as institutional demand for tools that cover both customer products and back-office work, and that framing is honest: this is Ripple selling the whole stack, not just begging for one more listing.

Then there is the awkward part. In 2024, Robinhood helped found the Global Dollar Network, the group built to push Paxos's USDG stablecoin and share the revenue it generates. In July, USDG even became the default lending asset for Robinhood Earn, its onchain lending product. Now RLUSD is joining the same shelf, and Robinhood has announced no change to its USDG deal. It did not answer CoinDesk's question about how the two tokens will coexist, so for now traders are left guessing.

What should traders watch next?

First, the rollout itself. The year-end deadline is close, but Robinhood has not said how many of its 28.6 million funded customers will actually be eligible on day one. Second, the product details: if RLUSD gets a role in Earn or lending like USDG has, that is the real tell that this is more than a listing. Third, the institutional side, with Bitstamp settlement and perpetual futures trading planned later this year. A listing alone does not move a stablecoin; usage does, and RLUSD still trails the big dollar tokens by a wide margin.

My own read is simple. This is Ripple's broadest single partnership yet, because it bundles distribution, settlement, treasury software and prime brokerage in one deal. But distribution is not demand. The number to watch is not the 28.6 million headline, it is how many customers actually hold and use RLUSD once it lands in the app. If that number grows, RLUSD stops being a side token and starts being a real third option in dollar stablecoins. If it stalls, this stays a nice press release.
