Tether's $8B Reserve Cushion Nearly Doubles — Is USDT Safer Now?

Tether USDT Q3 profit 1.5 billion excess reserves 8 billion Bitcoin Treasuries stablecoin

Tether's safety cushion nearly doubled in just three months, from $4.1 billion to $7.95 billion. That is the spare money sitting above what the world's biggest stablecoin owes its holders, and it grew even while the amount of USDT out in the world barely moved.

Key points:

  • Tether made $1.5 billion in the third quarter, taking its profit for the first nine months of 2026 to $4.5 billion.
  • At the end of September, it held $191.5 billion in assets against $183.5 billion it owed, leaving $7.95 billion spare.
  • Its Bitcoin pile alone jumped to $8.37 billion, which tells you price gains did a lot of the heavy lifting here.

The numbers come from Tether's latest reserve report, put together by accounting firm BDO. At the end of September, Tether held $132.4 billion in US Treasury bills, counting both the bills it owns outright and the ones it holds through short-term deals. That pile is now about as big as South Korea's whole stash of US government debt, and larger than the United Arab Emirates'.

Profit, meanwhile, stayed flat. The $1.5 billion Tether earned in the third quarter matched the quarter before it, and most of that income still comes from interest on those Treasury bills. USDT in circulation held near $184 billion across the first nine months, so the company did not grow its way to a bigger cushion by selling more coins. My own read is simple: watch the cushion, not the profit headline, because the cushion is what pays holders back if things go wrong.

What pushed the cushion up so fast?

A big part of the answer sits in Tether's own vault. Its Bitcoin stash rose from about $5.8 billion at the end of June to $8.37 billion by September 30, a gain of roughly $2.6 billion on paper, and its gold holdings reached $19.08 billion. That means rising coin and gold prices, not just fresh profit, pushed the spare money higher. Tether boss Paolo Ardoino also said USDT users have now passed 700 million, with most of the growth in emerging markets, and USDT still holds about 60% of the whole $297 billion stablecoin market.

What traders should watch next is whether that cushion holds. It has already swung hard once this year, halving in the second quarter when gold and Bitcoin fell, so a sharp drop in either could shrink it again fast. The next reserve report will show if Tether can keep the buffer near $8 billion without another lucky run in prices.
