VanEck just put Bitcoin inside a fund your grandparents could buy. The $244 billion asset manager launched its Wealth Builder ETF (NYSE: WBMO) on Tuesday, giving everyday investors a 2% slice of Bitcoin next to stocks, bonds and gold, all under one ticker.
Key points:
- VanEck's Wealth Builder ETF (WBMO) launched on the NYSE, targeting 2% Bitcoin exposure within a 1% to 5% range.
- The Bitcoin exposure comes through a spot Bitcoin ETP, not direct holdings of the coin.
- The fund blends global stocks, bonds and real assets like gold, and charges a 0.26% net annual fee.
WBMO is actively managed by VanEck's multi-asset team, and it packages the firm's Wealth Builder model portfolios, which until now were only available to financial advisers through third-party platforms. Roughly, the mix lands near 60% stocks, 31% bonds, 7.5% real assets and 2% Bitcoin, with the team rebalancing as markets move.
The 2% figure looks small on paper, but the signal is what matters for traders. VanEck's head of multi-asset solutions, David Schassler, said the traditional 60/40 portfolio was built for a different investment landscape, and that real assets alongside stocks and bonds can help investors handle a wider range of economic conditions. This is also not VanEck's first crypto step: in March it partnered with retirement platform Basic Capital to offer digital asset products inside US employer 401(k) plans.

What happens next?
For traders, the thing to watch is whether other big managers copy the template. If a 2% Bitcoin sleeve becomes normal inside mainstream funds, steady buying follows even when headlines turn bearish, because rebalancing does the work automatically. The risk runs the other way too: a 2% sleeve will not lift the fund much if Bitcoin rallies, and buyers here own no actual coins, only exposure through an ETP, with the usual volatility that comes with it.
The near-term tells are simple. First-week flows into WBMO will show whether advisers actually pick it up, and whether Bitcoin's weight drifts toward the 5% cap if it outperforms the rest of the mix. Bitcoin spent the week under $80,000, so this launch arrives while prices are soft, not euphoric, which makes the first flows an honest read on demand rather than hype.
