Hong Kong Takes Tokenized Settlement to 24/7, Stablecoin Trials Next

Hong Kong 24/7 tokenized settlement EnsembleTX stablecoin trials

Hong Kong's banks can now settle a tokenized trade at 3 a.m. just as easily as at 3 p.m. The city's central bank flipped its EnsembleTX system to round-the-clock, real-value settlement on Monday, and regulated stablecoins are next in line for the same trials.

Key points:

  • Settlement no longer stops when the banks close — EnsembleTX now runs 24/7 on real money, not test tokens.
  • Dealers have already tried secondary trades in tokenized Exchange Fund Bills, and the HKMA says regulated stablecoins join those trials soon.
  • HSBC's Hong Kong dollar stablecoin RedCoin picked up 50,000 users in about 10 days, which shows retail demand is already there.

On Monday, at Hong Kong FinTech Week, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority said it had moved EnsembleTX to a new stage that allows 24/7 real-value transactions. Chief Executive Eddie Yue called tokenized central bank money a "foundation layer" for round-the-clock settlement, and said tokenized bonds, money market funds, and bank deposits are already in use.

My own read is plain: Once settlement stops sleeping, the gap between crypto hours and bank hours starts to close for real, and that is the part traders should not shrug off.

The old limit was simple clock time. Banks first settled through Hong Kong's dollar settlement system, which only ran in set hours. When real-value trials began in November 2025, the HKMA said it planned to bring in tokenized central bank money so settlement could run around the clock, and Monday's step delivers that piece. The HKMA says the change lets banks and their clients move funds across borders, manage tokenized portfolios, and run treasury work outside normal settlement hours.

What changes when settlement never sleeps?

The HKMA has already run trial trades with recognized dealers in the secondary market for tokenized Exchange Fund Bills, short-term debt the regulator itself issues, and it says those trades should get faster in secondary and repo trading. Next, it plans to widen the same trials to regulated stablecoins. It also launched a tConnect Launchpad with Cyberport to link banks, tech firms, and digital asset builders on new tokenization tests.

Project Ensemble started in March 2024 to test how banks could settle tokenized deals with wholesale central bank digital money, and a sandbox opened that August for banks to link their tokenized deposit platforms. For traders, the honest gap is timing: the HKMA said stablecoin trials come "soon" but gave no date, and it named no adoption target. Watch which licensed stablecoins join first, and whether tokenized bond and fund volume picks up once night-time settlement is normal. For now, the switch is on, and the next test is whether stablecoins settle just as smoothly.
